We believe that there are three parties that benefit by participating in our training courses: the employer, the employee, and LOSH.
The average direct cost (WSIB premiums) to a company for a lost-time injury in 2006 was $19,560*. The estimated indirect cost (re-hiring, re-training, lost productivity, etc) for a lost-time injury was $78,240*. Should an incident occur, the onus is on the employer to prove due diligence. Employers have a direct responsibility for the safety of their workers, but also a unique opportunity to be a role model for young or vulnerable workers. Offering such training sets a standard for safety knowledge in the workplace. New workers rely on you for good advice, proper supervision, and ultimately, their safety. We benefit employers by providing information for young and vulnerable workers making them more knowledgeable, reducing the number of injuries and encouraging a safe environment, which leads to higher productivity.
Students, youth, and new workers who lack experience and trained judgement are at particular risk of getting injured in the workplace. The majority of course participants are unaware of some of their most basic rights and responsibility prior to taking our course. 96.4% of our participants indicate their knowledge of workplace health and safety has improved, and 92% found our course to be engaging and interesting, despite being three hours long. Only 66.8% of our participants said they had received training prior to taking our course. (Statistics collected from 1,244 surveys administered to local youth before and after training). The ultimate benefit to the employee is that they learn to identify and control workplace hazards, and gain an understanding of how to keep themselves from being injured or killed at work.
100% of the course fees generated through the courses offered by the Student Teaching and Latin Outreach Programs get redirected back into the programs to enable us to continue offering high-quality, low-cost training to local students, youth, and immigrant workers. Unlike for-profit companies offering similar services, the only beneficiary of our fees is the program itself.
